Family of choice

A not necessarily biologically related group of people, based on choice instead of blood, established to provide ongoing mutual social and emotional / psychological support. Also called found family. Unlike a “family of origin “(based on biological or legal ties), a family of choice is based on chosen bonds, not necessarily biological ones. Families of choice are common within the LGBT community, groups of veterans, supportive communities overcoming addiction or childhood abuse, and friend groups who have little to no contact with their biological parents.
